1920

With the help of insider information (an RIC man named Buckley), Michael Brennan and number men from the East Clare Brigade sneak into the Newmarket-on-Fergus RIC barracks and capture a number of RIC men who they tie up. They get away with six rifles, six revolvers, ammunition and intelligence reports.

1921

Large sweep of area of Clydagh mountains (near Ballyvourney) by British Army. Area includes Cork No.1 and Cork No. 3 Brigade Columns, First Southern Division HQ and HQs of Cork No.1 and Cork No. 3 Brigades but IRA do not engage. Three unarmed IRA men shot dead.

1798 - In Wexford, both sides of the conflict are inactive. In Ulster, the Battle of Ballynahinch takes place

1886 - Molly Malone reputedly "dies of the fever". The famous song, "Sweet Molly Malone" is a tribute to the memory of a real person who was a fishwife selling cockles and mussels in the streets of Dublin. A statue of her can be seen at the foot of Grafton Street in Dublin. In popular Dublin parlance, she's referred to as "The Tart with the Cart and "The Dish with the Fish"

1981: British Queen shot at by youth (not Irish but i thought id throw it in for the craic)

1690 - William of Orange lands at Carrickfergus

1919 - Capt John Alcock and Lt Arthur Whitten-Brown take off from Newfoundland on the first non-stop transatlantic flight to Galway, in a Vickers Vimy

1995 - Untimely death of Donegal-born blues guitarist and singer/songwriter Rory Gallagher. He dies at age 47 following complications after receiving a liver transplant

2000 - The Orange Order’s policy making body votes overwhelmingly not to enter into dialogue with the Parades Commission

2003 - Living up to its costly reputation, Dublin is named in the worldwide cost of living survey for 2003 as the third most expensive capital city in the EU. Only London and Copenhagen are more expensive.

i thought it was just IRA stuff but i really like the idea of it being worldwide freedom fighters. should be an excellent thread.

All things related to the struggle really. Che has inspired, and continues to inspire, many Irish Republicans. Plus he's half Irish anyway

RIC District Inspector Percival Lea-Wilson is shot and killed near his home in Gorey, Co Wexford.

RIC Constable Pierce Doogue is killed by a blow to the head during a riot in the Main St of Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

1921

A sweep made by the Essex Regiment in the Ardfield area on the west of Clonakilty Bay, Co Cork. A number of IRA men in the area including Jim 'Spud' Murphy and Jim Lane manage to escape

Neville Macready (GOC British Army in Ireland) presents to the British Cabinet's Irish Situation Committee with a draft proclamation of martial law. It was draconian. He stressed that the British Government would have to be prepared for many shootings, perhaps a hundred a week. Macready also made no concealment of his own belief (shared by John Anderson, Under Secretary) that coercion would not work.

1919 Ambush by men from the Kilbrittain company IRA on joint RIC-British Army patrol at Rathclarin. One IRA man and one British Army soldier wounded and IRA get away with five rifles, one revolver and 200 rounds of ammunition.

1921 US Customs agents discover 495 Thompson sub-machine guns and ammunition on Pier Two, Hoboken, New Jersey which were destined for Ireland.

IRA attack the RIC barracks in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone with the assistance of RIC men. However, it is unsuccessful and results in the death of one IRA man (Patrick Loughran). McDermott says that it was not an attack but an attempt to burn Innisrush RIC station in Cookstown.

Fire opened by RIC on Republican Police who are in the process of escorting prisoners

John and Patrick Watters shot dead by Auxilliaries

RIC Constable William Campbell is shot dead outside Dundalk, Co. Louth. That night three brothers (Patrick, John and Bernard Watters), who lived in the The Windmill Bar (at the junction of Quay St and Seatown in Dundalk) were taken from their beds and two were shot dead (Patrick & John). Bernard managed to escape.

1922

An Ulster Special Constabulary patrol is ambushed at Drumintee, Co. Armagh resulting in the death of S/Constable Thomas Russel.

Anti-Treaty forces raid Civic Guards barracks in Kildare removing arms and ammunition.

Frank Aiken’s 4th Northern Division IRA carry out a sectarian attack on Protestant farming families in Altanaveigh and Lisdrumliskea in South Armagh killing five and wounding four others

At least eight arson attacks in Belfast over this day and following day including the burning to death of 12 horses in a coal merchant’s yard. Three IRA men captured in Harry Ferguson’s garage at 4.45am on the 18th – the authorities noted that after they were captured that arson attacks in the area of the ‘Low Markets’ ceased. Three cinemas in West Belfast were burned on the 20th along with the Rock Bar on the Falls Road.

20lb IRA bomb exploded at British Houses of Parliament

1974: IRA bombs parliament
A bomb has exploded at the Houses of Parliament, causing extensive damage and injuring 11 people.

The IRA said it planted the 20 lb (9.1 kg) device which exploded at about 0828 BST in a corner of Westminster Hall.

The explosion is suspected to have fractured a gas main and a fierce fire spread quickly through the centuries-old hall in one of Britain's most closely-guarded buildings.

Scotland Yard detectives have said they fear this attack could herald the start of a new summer offensive by the dissident Irish group on government buildings.

A man with an Irish accent telephoned the Press Association with a warning only six minutes before the explosion. Police said a recognised IRA codeword was given.

Although officers were not able to completely clear the palace before the bomb went off, most of the injured were only slightly hurt.

Leader of the Commons Edward Short announced a review of security procedures would begin immediately, but he said the attack would not disrupt parliamentary business or intimidate MPs.

Liberal Chief Whip David Steel was in the building when the device detonated and told the BBC the damage looked considerable.

"I looked through Westminster Hall and the whole hall was filled with dust. A few minutes later it was possible to see flames shooting up through the windows," he said.

Probably because the sticks were on ceasefire then, weren't they? And I think was the first bomb in England during that period of the war too. So they had to make them look bad.

was thinking that as the provoes basically were a "dissident" group for a while
